Bone Broth + Bone Marrow

Part of my routine is preparing bone broth in my slow cooker. It’s easy to do, makes the house smell like Christmas, and is sooooo good for you!! Bone Broth is nutrient dense, easy to digest + good for your gut, boosts detoxification, and is full of healing compounds like collagen, proline, glycine, and glutamine (draxe.com) What I’m about to enjoy in this photo is the BONUS delicacy that comes along with preparing bone broth… bone marrow!! Similarly bone marrow helps promote healthy digestion, aids in joint health, builds immunity, & is full of essential omega 3 fatty acids! Most commonly bone marrow is enjoyed over toast with a dash of salt + pepper.

Directions:

  1. Pick up bones from @tooheyshawaiianmeats at the Upcountry Farmers market on Saturday.

  2. Roast bones @ 400F for 20 minutes.

  3. Place bones in a slow cooker + cover with filtered water. Add 2T of raw Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV helps pull calcium & other minerals from the bones) Let sit for 20 minutes (Note: Slow cooker is not on yet)*

  4. Turn on slow cooker + let simmer for 24 hours (Note: Most slow cookers tend to cook high so I usually turn my cooker on HIGH for the first 8-10 hours, then LOW for the next 10 hours, and finally on warm for the remaining last few hours)

  5. Turn off slow cooker and add salt + pepper to taste. Let cool

  6. Strain + drink by itself (hot) or use as a soup base. If drinking plain some optional toppings are: avocado, green onions, + sesame seeds.

*Variations: Add any combinations of herbs + veggies to create your own unique flavor. (I like to use bay leaf, onion, garlic, carrots, celery, lemon grass, kefir lime leaves, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon sticks, star anise)
